WELCOME TO THE AVID GARDENERS (TAG)

In this, our 30th year as a federated garden club, we welcome you to The Avid Gardeners’ website (TAG)! Located within Hilton Head Plantation on beautiful Hilton Head Island, SC, TAG is a very active club with many ongoing projects on our Island and within our Plantation. On the Island, these projects include the Plant It Pink garden at Hilton Head Hospital, the Memory Matters garden, the Volunteers in Medicine garden, and the Butterfly Garden and Korosi Vegetable and Herb Educational Garden at the Hilton Head Island grammar, middle and high school campus. Within our Plantation, TAG has planted, and maintains, the General Howard Davis Island garden and the lovely meditation garden at the Y-intersection of Seabrook Drive and Dolphin Head Drive. TAG also offers floral design workshops, and every year for the holiday season TAG members decorate every neighborhood sign in our Plantation. As our upcoming fiscal year begins with our meeting in September, an outstanding program has been developed for the year. We will make visits to the Colleton River garden of landscaper John Summerall, urban gartdener Emily Johnson of Johnson Farm, and a visit to Palmetto Bluff for a presentation by archaeologist Dr. Mary Socci. Meetings in our Plantation include “The Fungus Among Us,” a presentation about mushrooms and fungus by retired research scientist Dave DesJardiins, a presentation by The Greenery’s Carol Guedalia regarding the use of plants for air purification, mild medicines and even as a bug repellant, and finally, a presentation by bee keeper David Arnal entitled, “What is Happening to our Bees?” The Avid Gardeners are both masters and novices, women and men, designers and diggers, young and not so young, but all with a common interest in the how, when, where and why of gardening, Our members learn from each other (all new members are assigned an experienced Mentor), from our monthly newsletter, TAG Talk, from meeting programs and field trips, and from assisting with our many “in Plantation” and “on Island” projects. The primary bond amongst all TAG members, though, is the sharing of a common love of gardening.
